Our Story
One night, scrolling online, I watched a Japanese sharpener named Ryota stand a rolled sheet of paper upright on a bench — and cut it clean through with a kitchen knife. The paper didn't move. It just fell into two pieces.
I grew up in Fukuoka, Japan. I thought I knew Japanese knives. I didn't.
I bought a hand-forged bunka knife from Muneishi Kōbō, a small family workshop in Tosa that has been forging since 1955, where the second-generation master is a government-certified Traditional Craftsman. Then I tried to sharpen it on a cheap whetstone I found online.
The paper crumpled.
So I ordered proper stones from Japan — a Shapton and a Suehiro — and tried again.
The paper split. That was the moment I understood: it was never just the knife. Real tools, used properly, change what your hands can do.
Oni-Giri Blade exists to bring that moment to Australia. Every blade we carry is one I've chosen, used, and sharpened myself. Most come from small workshops in Kyushu, Shikoku and Seki — places where a knife is still one person's work from fire to edge.
What We Promise
Each knife we sell carries a serial number and a promise: your first sharpening is free. Buy from us at a market and I'll sharpen it on the spot, any time, for a year. Because a Japanese knife isn't a purchase — it's the start of a relationship with a tool.
